India's rice production is projected to reach a record 119.93 million tonnes (MT) in the 2024-25 kharif season, according to the agriculture ministry's first advance estimate. This increase of 6.67 million tonnes over the previous year's production comes amid surplus stocks in government warehouses and is attributed to favourable monsoon conditions. The harvesting of the Kharif crop is currently underway across the nation, with maize output also expected to hit an all-time high of 24.54 MT, while other coarse cereals like jowar and bajra show mixed trends in production.
Overall, the ministry estimates total foodgrain production for the kharif season at 164.70 MT, an increase from last year's 155.76 MT. While pulses production is expected to remain stable at approximately 6.95 MT, oilseeds production is projected to rise to 25.74 MT. However, cash crops like sugarcane, cotton, and jute/mesta are estimated to see declines in output. Notably, the ministry utilized Digital Crop Survey (DCS) data for area estimates for the first time, enhancing the accuracy of agricultural assessments, especially in key states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
