The government has introduced expanded quality compliance requirements through Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for over 150 products, spanning sectors from household appliances to industrial materials. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) oversees this initiative to ensure stricter safety and performance standards. The QCOs will cover products such as vacuum cleaners, stainless steel utensils, massage appliances, electrical appliances, furniture, and steel items. These standards are designed to prevent the import of substandard goods and ensure consumer access to high-quality products.
This move is part of India’s strategy to improve domestic manufacturing standards and reduce low-quality imports. Since 2014, the number of products under QCOs has grown from 106 to over 732 by October 2024. Industries such as chemicals, petrochemicals, and steel will face new regulations for fatty acids and steel strips. With varying enforcement dates across sectors, the government aims to enhance consumer safety and boost the quality of Indian-made goods.
