Government introduces Model Context Protocol server to integrate AI tools with official statistical databases

The Government of India has now initiated a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, which will allow Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to integrate with official statistical databases, thus taking a major step towards strengthening data-driven governance. The initiative showcases India’s expanding innovation ecosystem, driven by policy support, academic institutions, startups, and industry collaboration. The Minister noted that India’s innovation landscape is evolving rapidly, supported by programmes aimed at strengthening research infrastructure, promoting skill development, and encouraging innovation-led growth. The platform reflects the government’s focus on fostering a knowledge-based economy by integrating education, research, and industry to create scalable and impactful solutions. 

The design of the MCP server is to enable interoperability across platforms, which ensures that different AI tools can interact with official statistical databases in a secure manner. This is expected to enable researchers, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders to access reliable data in a more efficient manner while maintaining the integrity and security standards. The initiative is expected to boost the quality of the statistical environment in the country by enhancing the quality of disseminated data, reducing manual interventions, and incorporating advanced analytical capabilities.
