The government has formally recognised over 180,000 firms as startups as of June 30, 2025. According to Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Mr. Jitin Prasada, the number of startups recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has grown significantly from around 500 in 2016 to 180,683 by June 30, 2025. These government-recognised startups are eligible for a range of fiscal incentives, including income tax benefits, under the Startup India action plan. To provide financial support, the government is implementing flagship schemes such as the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS).
As of June 30, this year, Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) backed by the FFS have invested Rs. 23,679 crore (US$ 2.70 billion) in 1,282 startups. The SISFS provides financial assistance to seed-stage startups via incubators, with incubators under the scheme selecting 2,942 startups and approving a total of Rs. 522.42 crore (US$ 59.62 million) in funding as of June 30. Additionally, the CGSS has guaranteed 289 loans, amounting to Rs. 667.85 crore (US$ 76.21 million), for startup borrowers by the same date. In a separate announcement, the minister stated that as of August 1, 2025, a Geographical Indication (GI) tag has been granted to 697 products, with 658 from India and 39 from foreign countries. There are also 659 GI tag applications pending before the geographical indications registry.
