The Government of India has reported a significant rise in self-employment across the country, reflecting changing employment patterns and growing entrepreneurial activity. Replying to supplementary questions during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the share of self-employed workers in India has increased to 58%, compared with 52% in 2017-18. The increase highlights a shift in the structure of employment, with more individuals opting for independent economic activities rather than traditional wage-based jobs. The trend has been observed alongside broader economic expansion and the government’s focus on strengthening livelihood opportunities across sectors.

Further, the statement highlighted that several government initiatives aimed at boosting entrepreneurship, skill development, and local enterprise have played a key role in this growth. Programmes supporting small businesses, startups, and traditional artisans have helped individuals create their own livelihood opportunities while contributing to economic productivity. Schemes promoting skill development, financial inclusion, and rural enterprise have also encouraged people to start micro or household enterprises. In addition, initiatives supporting startups and self-reliant entrepreneurship have expanded opportunities for independent workers across both rural and urban areas. The government noted that these efforts are helping to strengthen the labour market by enabling more people to participate in productive activities and generate income through self-employment.
