The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is poised to revolutionize India's digital commerce landscape by fostering an inclusive, decentralized ecosystem that benefits businesses of all sizes. Launched by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Government of India, ONDC aims to create an open, interoperable network where buyers and sellers can transact directly, bypassing the need for platform-specific reliance, such as Amazon or Flipkart. This public technology initiative operates as a private non-profit Section 8 company. It focuses on increasing accessibility for both businesses and consumers, offering a unique opportunity for innovation.

According to a report by Kalaari Capital, ONDC is seen as a catalyst for India's next wave of entrepreneurial innovation. The initiative addresses the gap between urban and rural sectors, bringing organized commerce advantages to small businesses and local retailers while preserving the personal touch of traditional commerce. The platform’s innovative features, such as Artificial Intelligence(AI)-driven cataloging, multilingual interfaces, and integrated value chains, empower small businesses like kirana stores to manage inventory, list products in regional languages, and connect with national supply chains. This is expected to democratize digital commerce, foster grassroots innovation, and contribute to creating a more inclusive economy.
