GreenLine to invest US$ 167 million in LNG trucking push

India’s green logistics sector is set for a major boost as GreenLine Mobility Solutions, an Essar venture, announced plans to invest Rs. 1,500 crore (US$ 167 million) over the next three years to significantly expand its LNG-powered trucking operations across the country. The company plans to increase its network to more than 10,000 LNG and electric trucks while also establishing a nationwide network of 50 LNG refuelling stations. Currently operating around 1,000 LNG- and EV-powered trucks across major freight corridors, GreenLine serves sectors such as steel, cement, mining, FMCG and chemicals. The company stated that LNG-powered trucks can reduce fuel costs for long-haul transport operators by up to 20% due to improved mileage compared to conventional diesel vehicles.

GreenLine highlighted that replacing 10% of India’s diesel trucking network with LNG vehicles could help the country save nearly Rs. 47,435- 56,922 crore (US$ 5-6 billion) annually in foreign exchange by reducing fuel imports. The company also noted that LNG trucks emit nearly 25% lower carbon dioxide emissions, 85% less nitrogen oxides and 95% lower particulate matter compared to diesel trucks, making them a cleaner alternative for freight transportation. GreenLine further stated that its LNG trucks can travel up to 1,200 kilometres on a single fill and carry significantly heavier loads than conventional diesel trucks, supporting India’s broader focus on energy security and sustainable mobility solutions.
