Gujarat to build semiconductor research-training hub at IIT Gandhinagar with US$ 19.96 million investment

Gujarat is strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem by establishing the Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH) at IIT Gandhinagar with an investment of Rs. 190 crore (US$ 19.96 million). The initiative is being jointly funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Gujarat Government’s Department of Science and Technology and IIT Gandhinagar. Designed to support India’s ambition of becoming self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing, the state-of-the-art facility will provide advanced research infrastructure and industry-oriented training for engineering students, faculty members, technicians and semiconductor professionals. IIT Gandhinagar has already initiated the procurement of advanced equipment and the appointment of consultants to develop the required infrastructure, with the centre expected to become operational soon.

SAMARTH will focus on research, innovation and workforce development to create a steady pipeline of “fab-ready” engineers capable of supporting India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor manufacturing sector. The hub will equip learners with practical, hands-on exposure to semiconductor fabrication processes while enabling faculty members and industry professionals to upgrade their technical expertise. By integrating advanced research with specialised skill development, the facility is expected to strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and government, reinforcing Gujarat’s position as a leading semiconductor manufacturing and innovation destination. The initiative aligns with the country’s broader efforts to build a globally competitive semiconductor value chain, enhance domestic technological capabilities and support the long-term growth of India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem through a highly skilled workforce.
