Hindustan Copper Ltd. (HCL), India’s state-owned copper producer, plans to invest more than Rs. 7,000 crore (US$ 736.84 million) over the next five to six years to strengthen its mining and copper operations. The planned investment will cover exploration, reopening of closed mines and expansion of copper and critical minerals activities, supporting efforts to increase domestic copper production and strengthen India’s mineral security. Over the past three years, HCL has added 135.52 million tonnes of copper ore reserves and resources, taking its combined reserves and resources to 767.37 million tonnes. The company is also pursuing new copper deposits in India and overseas, while reopening closed mines to enhance production capacity.

HCL has entered into a collaboration with Chile’s state-owned copper producer CODELCO for technical cooperation in mining, beneficiation and exploration, along with capacity building and knowledge sharing. In India, the company has signed Memoranda of Understanding with RITES, Indian Oil Corporation, Coal India, Oil India and GAIL to support mining expansion and mineral security. HCL holds all operating mining leases for copper ore in India and has access to around 45% of the country’s copper ore reserves and resources. As India’s sole vertically integrated producer of refined copper, the company operates across mining, ore beneficiation, smelting, refining and copper rod extrusion. Rising demand from infrastructure development, renewable energy, electric mobility and other clean-energy applications is expected to support the long-term growth of India’s copper industry.
