Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZL), India’s largest integrated zinc producer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sulfozyme Agro India Pvt. Ltd. to develop sustainable and environmentally responsible metal recovery solutions. The partnership will focus on leveraging bio-based technologies to enhance the recovery of valuable metals from low-grade ores, mine waste and tailings, supporting the company’s broader circular economy and resource-efficiency objectives. The collaboration aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s strategy of adopting innovative technologies to maximise resource utilisation while reducing the environmental footprint of mining operations. By integrating biotechnology with mineral processing, the initiative seeks to improve metal recovery rates, reduce waste generation and promote sustainable mining practices. The agreement also reflects the growing role of research-driven partnerships in strengthening India’s critical minerals and metals value chain while supporting the transition towards greener industrial processes.

Under the partnership, Sulfozyme Agro will contribute its expertise in microbial and bio-processing solutions to develop advanced recovery methods that can extract metals from materials that are traditionally difficult to process. The initiative is expected to support Hindustan Zinc’s long-term sustainability goals, enhance operational efficiency and unlock additional value from existing mining resources. As demand for critical minerals continues to rise globally, mining companies are increasingly investing in technologies that improve resource recovery while minimising environmental impact. The collaboration demonstrates how innovation, biotechnology and sustainable industrial practices can work together to strengthen India’s mining sector and support the development of a more resource-efficient economy. The partnership is also expected to contribute to the adoption of cleaner technologies across the metals and mining industry, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth and responsible resource management.
