Hiring in IT sector expands by 16% in April on AI, cloud push: Report

India's IT sector witnessed a 16% YoY growth in hiring in April, driven by factors such as artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, cloud modernisation, and the expansion of Global Capability Centers (GCCs), according to a report by foundit Insights Tracker (FIT). GCCs played a significant role in this hiring surge, contributing over 1.1 million new tech jobs in FY25 and increasing demand for roles like data engineering, DevOps, and enterprise architecture. The report highlighted that skill-based hiring continued to dominate, with 62% of IT employers prioritising practical expertise over formal qualifications. Top in-demand domains included AI/ML, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data analytics, which together accounted for 95% of job postings in the IT sector.
Cities like Coimbatore (40%), Ahmedabad (17%), and Baroda (15%) recorded remarkable annual hiring growth driven by hybrid work models and cost advantages. Metro hubs like Bengaluru (9%), Mumbai (9%), and Delhi NCR (7%) continued to lead hiring for leadership and specialist roles. This sharp rebound in hiring marks a significant shift from the fluctuations experienced in previous years, indicating a robust recovery and growth trajectory for the IT sector. The emphasis on skill-based hiring and the demand for specific tech domains underscore the sector's adaptability and focus on innovation, positioning it for sustained expansion in the coming years.
