HPCL and Tata Motors have joined hands to launch a pilot project focused on developing an organised ecosystem for the collection, storage, transportation and recycling of used automotive lubricants in India. The initiative seeks to address the challenge of managing used lubricants, which are categorised as hazardous waste, while supporting the country’s circular economy goals and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. Under the collaboration, HPCL will oversee the aggregation and transportation of used lubricants through authorised collection systems and ensure their transfer to registered recyclers. Tata Motors will utilise its extensive authorised service network to facilitate structured collection and promote responsible disposal practices across its ecosystem.
The pilot project will initially be rolled out across select states and monitored by a joint committee comprising representatives from both companies to evaluate operational progress and scalability. The partnership is expected to help establish a traceable waste management model that can improve resource efficiency, reduce environmental risks and enable the production of high-quality re-refined base oil from used lubricants. According to HPCL, the collaboration marks a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint associated with lubricant disposal and strengthening sustainable industrial practices. The initiative is also expected to set new benchmarks for responsible waste management in the automotive and energy sectors while contributing to India’s long-term sustainability and resource-efficiency objectives.
