In Tamil Nadu, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., a Government of India Company with a Maharatna Status, has launched 'poWer 99', a branded petrol with an Octane rating of 99, to meet the demand for premium fuel from the population of high-end vehicles and performance bikes in the state.

'poWer 99' is currently the highest octane rated petrol available in India with an Octane classification of 99. The octane level of its competitors' premium fuels is not less than 97.

Most high-end vehicles and bikes are developed to function on petrol rated high octane, which is good at preventing spontaneous or irregular engine combustion and thus improving engine performance.

HPCL is planning to extend the product's scope to other Tamil Nadu cities in the next two years. 'poWer 99' is already available in 20 cities across India.

“In several Indian cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai, the market for high-end cars is growing. Hence, there is also an increase in demand for good fuel with a high-octane rating. 'poWer 99' is a premium branded petrol. It has an octane rating of 99, which is currently the highest in India,” said Mr. Sandeep Maheshwari, Chief General Manager, Retail - South Zone.

During the compression stage of an internal combustion engine without auto-ignition, 'poWer 99' can tolerate a greater temperature rise. For high-end cars from automakers like Porsche, Volvo, Lexus, Lamborghini, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and Ferrari, this makes it an ideal fuel option.

For performance (race) cars, and for performance motorcycles from manufacturers such as Triumph, Harley Davidson, and Ducati, among others, fuel will also be extremely crucial.

Mr. Maheshwari also added that 'poWer 99' also limits emissions due to its high efficiency in the combustion chamber. It also does not contain heavy metals that are toxic. Such variables make poWer 99' an environmentally friendly fuel. The United States Environmental Protection Agency approves the octane enhancement used in 'poWer 99.'

HPCL owns and operates two major refineries supplying a wide range of petroleum fuels & specialties, one with a capacity of 7.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) in Mumbai and one with a capacity of 8.3 MMTPA in Visakhapatnam. Comprising ports, pipeline networks, aviation service stations, LPG bottling plants, inland relay depots and retail outlets, lube, and LPG distributorships, it has a large supply & distribution system.
