India’s alcoholic beverages industry holds significant untapped potential in global markets, with products such as gin, beer, wine, and rum increasingly gaining international recognition, according to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Speaking at Alcobev India 2025, organised by the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverages Companies (CIABC), APEDA Chairman Mr. Abhishek Dev stated that India aims to boost alcoholic beverage exports from the current Rs. 3,162.21 crore (US$ 370.5 million) to Rs. 8,535 crore (US$ 1 billion) by 2030. He urged the industry to explore new global markets rather than relying solely on domestic demand. He added that venturing internationally would drive product quality and global branding.

Mr. Abhishek Dev also mentioned that India is nearly finalising a mutual recognition agreement for organic products with Australia, including organic wine. Supporting the sector’s export ambitions, Food Processing Secretary Mr. Subrata Gupta highlighted the need to increase value addition and reduce wastage in India’s agricultural processing. He pointed out that while countries like Thailand process 40% of their fruits and vegetables, India processes only 3–4%. Similarly, while Brazil processes a large share of its meat, India manages just 34%. He called for enhanced processing and export of alcoholic beverages to generate higher incomes for farmers and valuable foreign exchange for the country, reinforcing the potential of this high-value segment.
