IBM partners top Indian academic institutions for quantum computing education, research

On Tuesday, IBM announced that it has collaborated with 11 top-tier academic institutions including the IIT Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore to enable ‘over-the-cloud’ access to its quantum systems to boost advanced training and research in the area of quantum computing.

The collaboration would offer the students and faculty across these 11 institutions to access IBM quantum systems, quantum tools, quantum learning resources, over IBM Cloud for the purpose of education and research and help them to leverage using the Qiskit open-source framework for actual quantum computers and programme.

The collaboration, a part of IBM Quantum Educators programme, aims at enabling quality educational experiences via collaboration of the faculties in the field.

The partner institutions include Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai, IISER – Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) - Pune, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Kolkata, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, the University of Calcutta, and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore

The program also include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Kharagpur.

The programme various benefits such as pulse access on the additional systems, additional access to systems beyond IBM''s open systems, and private collaboration opportunities with other trainers in the programme.

For the advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, Quantum Computing Lab courses would be hosted by IISER- Thiruvananthapuram, IIT-Madras and ISI-Kolkata. These courses would leverage IBM quantum systems for lab sessions.

Ms. Gargi Dasgupta, Director of IBM Research India and CTO, IBM India/South Asia said, “Quantum Computing is a paradigm-shifting technology that can force numerous innovations in the future.”

She added, "By offering access to our systems over the cloud, the company (IBM) is offering India's young and brightest minds to train on innovative technologies and become industry ready. IBM is focused on expanding quantum-ready workforce and establish a quantum community ecosystem in India."
