In FY24, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) achieved a remarkable milestone by securing 435 patents, more than double the previous year's count of 204. This surge in patent filings underscores IIT Madras' leading position in India's academic landscape, with experts noting it as the highest among academic institutions. This success is attributed to concerted efforts to encourage faculty, researchers, and students to protect their innovations through intellectual property filings facilitated by the institute's Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC&SR) and its legal cell.

Since its inception in 1959, IIT Madras has filed over 2,550 IP applications, resulting in approximately 1,100 registered or granted domestic and international patents. The institute has seen significant patent activity in sustainability, healthcare, and artificial intelligence/machine learning. IIT Madras aims to expand its patent portfolio further, setting ambitious targets of 450-500 patents within the next year. This commitment reflects the institute's dedication to fostering innovation, driving research, and contributing to societal advancement through technological breakthroughs.
