Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) spearheads India's eMobility sector with 15 government projects to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. These projects, conducted by the Department of Engineering Design, cover various aspects, including developing India-centric technologies, safety enablement, field studies, policy inputs, and skilling initiatives. The department has established six state-of-the-art labs to support research, skilling, and project work. They also collaborate with leading experts and consultants to ensure academic programmes remain relevant to the industry. IIT Madras is working on a seven-sided approach to eMobility, collaborating with Indian industry, the government, and international experts. The department has set up a Centre of Excellence for Zero Emission Trucking. It is engaged with stakeholders across the country.

IIT Madras undertakes projects to support the governments of India and Tamil Nadu. It focuses on high-quality engineering and application work for social relevance and acceptance. The institute aims to address the entire eMobility ecosystem, not just technology or engineering aspects, to have a definitive impact on the market. They are working on chargers, motors, batteries, charging processes, energy management, policy levers, cost analysis, and future trends, all in Indian conditions. The institute is also looking to unlock more resources for skilling, testing, and project work, as well as build a pan-India network with industry, government, and academic participation to address the larger goals for the country.
