In a momentous development, India is poised to preside over and host the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s World Heritage Committee in New Delhi from July 21 to 31 this year, as announced by Mr. Vishal V Sharma, the Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO on Tuesday. This decision underscores New Delhi's role as the global focal point for discussions on heritage preservation, marking a historic occasion for India's cultural and historical legacy. Notably, this marks the first instance of a country leading and hosting the committee. As per UNESCO's official statement from the 19th extraordinary session in 2023, the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee was scheduled to be held in India based on a proposal from the Indian authorities and in consultation with the UNESCO Director-General. The session is slated to take place in New Delhi from July 21 to 31, 2024.
