The inaugural meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Defence Cooperation, which took place in New Delhi, India, on 09 December 2025, is the implementation of the India-Brunei Defence Partnership, initiated on 04 February 2023. Discussions were centred on expanding military-to-military engagement, improving joint training opportunities, and increasing cooperation in maritime security, specifically the protection of sea lanes, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and capacity building. The two countries also sought to identify additional areas for cooperation in Defence Industrial Cooperation and Technology Partnerships to strengthen their strategic partnership. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, and Ms. Poh Kui Choon, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Brunei. Before the meeting commenced, Mr. Amitabh Prasad and Ms. Poh Kui Choon signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the JWG, thereby formalising its creation and establishing the framework for structured, long-term cooperation.
Mr. Amitabh Prasad and Ms. Poh Kui Choon reaffirmed the two nations' shared belief in the importance of fostering and preserving a climate of peace and stability, and of adherence to a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific Region. Ms. Poh Kui Choon also had the opportunity to meet with India’s Defence Secretary, Mr. Rajesh Kumar Singh, as well as visit the New Defence Public Sector Undertaking Bhawan. This facility provides an integrated, modern platform for the sixteen Defence Public Sector Undertakings located in India.
