OpenAI CEO Mr. Sam Altman, highlighted India's growing importance in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting that the country has tripled its users of OpenAI’s services in the last year and is becoming a key player in AI innovation. During a discussion with India's Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information & Broadcasting, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Mr. Sam Altman praised India’s comprehensive approach to AI, which spans chips, models, and innovative applications and emphasized that India should be a global leader in the AI revolution. His remarks come when the global AI landscape is shifting, with competition from emerging players like DeepSeek and challenges to traditional Western dominance, including OpenAI's position in the market. He expressed confidence in India's potential to lead in AI development.
His visit also coincides with India's efforts to assert its AI capabilities. The country is building its AI model to rival established global models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, focusing on affordability and accessibility. India plans to launch a foundational AI model, with government support reducing costs to under Rs. 100 (US$ 1.14) per hour, significantly lower than global alternatives. Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized India’s ambition to create a world-class AI model and positioned the country to compete internationally. This comes when India is also tackling legal challenges related to AI, including copyright disputes involving OpenAI. However, OpenAI maintains that its use of publicly available data is within legal bounds.
