The total number of 2,361 MW of biomass power projects and 228 MWe of waste-to-energy projects have been installed in the last ten years in the bioenergy sector in the Indian context. Additionally, the total number of 2.88 lakh biogas plants have also been installed in the country to increase the use of sustainable energy solutions. The progress in this area has been supported by the continued assistance to the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), Phase-I, which was notified with a budget of Rs. 998 Crore (US$ 120 million) for the period from 2022-2023 to 2025-2026. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has also contributed to the growth of the bioenergy sector by assisting the projects with the facility of Central Financial Assistance under various schemes to develop projects around biomass power, bio-CNG, Biogas, and waste-to-energy projects.
The strategic measures initiated by the government concern the provision of financial support incentives for the production of power from biogas and agro-industrial wastes, the promotion of bio-CNG plants, and subsidies for the establishment of biomass cogeneration plants. These initiatives have contributed to an accelerated growth in renewable power additions in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Punjab, which have turned out to be leaders in the sector’s expansion.
