The central government has set a target to export Rs. 87,450 crore (US$ 10 billion) worth of technical textiles under its National Technical Textiles Mission, as announced by the Minister of State for Textiles, Mr. Pabitra Margherita, in the Rajya Sabha. Launched in 2020-21 and extended until 2025-26 with a financial outlay of Rs. 1,480 crore (US$ 169.2 million), the Mission aims to position India as a global leader in technical textiles. India’s exports in this sector range between Rs. 17,490 crore (US$ 2 billion) and Rs. 26,235 crore (US$ 3 billion). The Mission includes components focused on research, innovation, market promotion, export growth, and skill development.
The technical textiles sector, which includes materials used for their technical performance in various industries such as roads, railways, healthcare, agriculture, and defense, holds immense growth potential. The Mission emphasizes researching and developing indigenous machinery and specialty fibers, increasing user awareness, and creating skilled human resources. According to Mr. Pabitra Margherita, expanding technical textiles will greatly contribute to India's infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and industrial sectors, driving the nation’s growth in multiple industries.
