India aims to be among the top five sporting nations globally by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of independence, said Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, at the inauguration of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad. He highlighted that under Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made remarkable progress in the sporting sector, introducing several reforms to strengthen infrastructure, athlete development, and governance. He noted that the country has also bid to host the 2036 Olympics and aspires to be ranked among the top 10 sporting nations within the next decade.
He outlined key initiatives such as the Target Podium Olympic Scheme, which provides elite athletes with international exposure and support to enhance performance. He further emphasised the recently introduced Sports Policy, designed to empower sports science, expand access, and develop modern infrastructure. He also underscored the Sports Governance Bill presented in the last Parliament session, aimed at creating an athlete-centric framework and ensuring greater women’s representation in National Sports Federations. Praising Ahmedabad for successfully hosting the championship, he described the event as a reflection of India’s growing sporting prowess. International Weightlifting Federation President Mr. Mohammed Hasan Jalood lauded the outstanding organisation and infrastructure, calling the occasion significant for Indian sports.
