Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal announced that India aims to quadruple its port capacity by 2047 to support economic growth and expanding international trade. Speaking in Rotterdam during his visit to the Netherlands, he stated that India had doubled its port capacity over the past decade, with a further fourfold expansion planned over the next two decades. Cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam offers opportunities in maritime infrastructure, green energy, carbon capture and sustainable trade. Such partnerships could strengthen India’s maritime capabilities and improve the efficiency of its logistics network.

Collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam will focus on modernising existing ports, developing world-class infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency. The government’s Sagarmala initiative also supports port infrastructure expansion and improved maritime connectivity. Stronger ties with international maritime hubs could help India optimise port operations, strengthen logistics capabilities and facilitate international trade. India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy is supported by progress in quality, efficiency and productivity, strengthening its role in global trade and logistics. Cooperation with the Netherlands, particularly in sustainable maritime development and green energy, could further advance India’s port modernisation ambitions. The planned expansion by 2047 reflects the strategic importance of maritime infrastructure in meeting future trade requirements and supporting long-term economic growth.
