India is emerging as one of the most AI-ready healthcare markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with consumers increasingly using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to better understand medical conditions, prepare for consultations and navigate the healthcare system, according to a new Bain & Company report. The study found that AI adoption is particularly strong in India, with 78% of consumers using GenAI to understand diagnoses and treatment options, 73% relying on it to prepare for medical appointments and 72% using it to navigate healthcare services. The report also pointed to a broader shift in patient expectations across Asia-Pacific, where healthcare users are seeking more convenient and responsive care experiences. In India, 88% of consumers want healthcare to be more convenient, while nearly 80% expect doctors to be reachable through calls or messaging platforms.
The report also highlighted the growing demand for coordinated care, with 93% of Indian consumers preferring a single point of contact to manage their healthcare journey, reflecting dissatisfaction with fragmented treatment pathways. Access and affordability remain key concerns, with high treatment costs emerging as the top issue for 43% of respondents in India, followed by long waiting times at 42% and delays in appointments at 30%. More than 45% of Indian consumers said they struggle to understand and access healthcare services, while 62% reported consulting multiple providers before receiving the correct diagnosis or treatment plan. Bain noted that healthcare providers combining trusted clinical care with AI-enabled services and stronger care coordination are likely to be best placed to meet evolving consumer expectations and improve long-term outcomes.
