India and Japan share a Special Strategic and Global Partnership rooted in centuries-old civilisational, cultural and spiritual ties. One of the earliest recorded links dates back to 752 AD, when Indian monk Mr. Bodhisena performed the consecration ceremony of the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple in Nara. Modern-era leaders such as Indian Philosopher Mr. Swami Vivekananda, Indian Poet Mr. Rabindranath Tagore, Former Chairman of Tata Group Mr. J.R.D. Tata, Indian Nationalist Leader Mr. Subhas Chandra Bose, Indian Revolutionary Leader Mr. Rash Behari Bose and Indian Judge and Jurist Mr. Radha Binod Pal further strengthened bilateral goodwill. Diplomatic relations were formally established on April 28, 1952, following India’s separate Peace Treaty with Japan after the Second World War. Since then, bilateral relations have steadily evolved from a Global Partnership in 2000 to a Strategic and Global Partnership in 2006, and finally to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014, supported by annual Prime Ministerial Summits since 2006.
Today, India-Japan cooperation spans political engagement, defence and security, trade and investment, infrastructure, science and technology, digital innovation, healthcare, clean energy, climate action and people-to-people exchanges. India’s Act East Policy, Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) complement Japan’s vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), reinforcing strategic convergence in the region. During the 15th Annual Summit in Tokyo in August 2025, both countries adopted a Joint Vision for the Next Decade, a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation and an Action Plan on Human Resource Exchange, while agreeing to facilitate Rs. 5.8 lakh crore (US$ 61.27 billion) in Japanese private investment in India over the next decade. With more than 70 bilateral dialogue mechanisms, the upcoming 16th India-Japan Annual Summit is expected to further strengthen cooperation across strategic and emerging sectors.
