India and Japan held their first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategic Dialogue in Mumbai on April 21, 2026, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral cooperation in emerging technologies. The dialogue was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (Cyber Diplomacy), Ministry of External Affairs Mr. Amit A. Shukla and Deputy Assistant Minister for Cyber Security, Japan Mr. Hanada Takahiro, and brought together representatives from government, industry and research institutions from both countries. The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration across the entire AI value chain, including policy alignment, innovation and industrial applications. Both sides emphasised the importance of co-creation and policy convergence to build a robust, innovative and trustworthy AI ecosystem.
The dialogue also explored avenues to enhance joint research, talent mobility and international cooperation in AI governance, reflecting a shared commitment to shaping global standards in artificial intelligence. It builds on the India–Japan AI Cooperation Initiative, announced during Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in August 2025, which positions AI as a key pillar of the bilateral partnership. The initiative is strategically significant as it combines India’s strong digital talent base with Japan’s advanced technological capabilities, enabling both countries to jointly address emerging opportunities and challenges in AI. The dialogue is expected to serve as a platform for sustained engagement, with both sides agreeing to continue discussions and expand collaboration in future rounds, further strengthening their long-term technology partnership.
