India and Oman agree to cooperate in the field of Archives

A delegation from the National Archives of India (NAI), led by Director General, Mr. Arun Singal, visited the National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) of Oman on February 21-22, 2024. The aim was to explore bilateral cooperation in the archival field, and the delegation received exclusive presentations from various divisions of NRAA, covering Electronic Records, Microfilm, Private Records, Access, Electronic Storage, and Conservation. The visit included a tour of the Permanent Exhibition of Records and the Document Destruction Lab.

During discussions with Chairman of NRAA, Dr. Hamad Mohammed Al-Dhawyani, Mr.Arun Singhal highlighted historical ties between India and Oman. He presented a list of 70 select documents and 523 pages of copies pertaining to Oman's history, ranging from 1793 to 1953. The meeting resulted in the drafting of an Executive Programme of Cooperation (EPC) to formalize institution-to-institution collaboration. Proposed activities include joint exhibitions, exchange of digital copies, an expert exchange program for digitization and preservation, and collaborative publications based on curated archival materials. The delegation also encouraged the Indian diaspora in Oman to preserve their private archives, offering technical assistance from NAI for conservation and digitization.
