India and Singapore are exploring options for a proposed 2,000 MW cross-border power interconnection, including a land-based transmission corridor of around 3,000 km connecting Imphal in India to Singapore through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Mr. Shripad Yesso Naik, announced the proposal while addressing the East Asia Summit energy ministers’ meeting in Manila. The proposed interconnection could facilitate reliable cross-border electricity trade, support clean energy integration and strengthen regional energy security. India also expressed its readiness to share expertise in large-scale renewable energy deployment, grid integration, transmission planning, energy storage, green hydrogen and clean energy technologies with participating East Asian countries.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regional energy cooperation. The government has called for greater institutional linkages between the ASEAN Centre for Energy and Indian institutions, including NTPC, Power Grid Corporation of India and the Central Electricity Authority. Potential areas of collaboration include strategic petroleum reserves, electricity system resilience, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and gas supply security, renewable energy forecasting, battery energy storage and green hydrogen. The proposed power corridor could create opportunities for greater regional electricity connectivity and cooperation in clean energy technologies. Further exploration of the interconnection options could support cross-border power trade and strengthen energy supply resilience across participating countries.
