India’s gem and jewellery sector has signed multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Thailand’s jewellery trade to enhance bilateral trade. Exports from India to Thailand account for 15% of Thailand’s total gem and jewellery imports. The country ranks among the top 10 importers of Indian gem and jewellery products. India’s gross exports of gems and jewellery stood at Rs. 2,02,640 crore (US$ 23,188 million) in the first ten months of FY25, marking a 12.11% decline compared to last year.
The Gems and Jewellery Research and Laboratories Centre (IIGJ-RLC) signed an MoU with the Gem & Jewellery Institute of Thailand (GIT), a public body under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. Another MoU was signed between the Jewellers Association Jaipur and the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association. At the same time, a third was finalized between the Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association (SGJIA) and the Thai Silver Exporters Association (TSEA). Chairman of IIGJ Jaipur and Director of IIGJ-RLC, Mr. Nawal Agarwal, highlighted that the MoU with GIT Thailand would facilitate gemstone standardisation, joint research, and knowledge exchange, enhancing trust and transparency. President of Jewellers Association Jaipur, Mr. Alok Sonkhia, stated that the agreement with Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association would strengthen the coloured gemstone trade. President of SGJIA, Mr. Arvind Gupta, noted that the collaboration with TSEA would boost the silver jewellery trade by driving innovation, design excellence, and market expansion.
