India has announced a series of reforms to strengthen its measurement infrastructure and modernise the country’s legal metrology ecosystem on World Metrology Day 2026. The Department of Consumer Affairs highlighted initiatives aimed at improving accuracy, transparency and efficiency in measurement systems used across trade, industry and public services. Key reforms include the expansion of digital governance through the eMaap Portal, strengthening of verification and certification mechanisms, and progress under the ‘One Nation, One Time’ initiative to establish a unified and precise timekeeping framework across the country. The government also emphasised the growing role of legal metrology in ensuring fair trade practices, protecting consumer interests and supporting ease of doing business. These measures are expected to enhance confidence in measurement standards while supporting India’s integration with global quality and standards infrastructure.
The reforms are part of broader efforts to align India’s measurement ecosystem with international best practices and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in global markets. The government highlighted that India has enhanced its capabilities in standards certification and measurement science, including recognition under the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) framework. Accurate and standardised measurements play a critical role across sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, telecommunications, energy, infrastructure and digital services, where precision directly impacts quality, safety and operational efficiency. The adoption of modern technologies and digital platforms is expected to improve regulatory compliance, reduce administrative burden and facilitate trade. As India expands its manufacturing base and advances towards becoming a developed economy, a robust measurement infrastructure will remain essential for supporting industrial growth, consumer protection, innovation and international competitiveness.
