According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Trade Ministers of India and the 10-nation ASEAN grouping have approved the review's scope in order to make the trade pact more business-friendly.

The issue was covered at the 19th ASEAN-India Economic Ministers' meeting, which took place in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The agreement would be continually updated through the review with current trade facilitation techniques and simplified regulatory and customs processes. A joint committee was also established by the ministers to quickly assess the agreement.

A trade agreement between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was signed on August 13, 2009 and went into effect on January 1, 2010.
