India is in a “nascent stage” in industrial engineering study and research, according to Union Commerce Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal, which is essential for creating robust supply chains.

“We need to accomplish a lot on this front and there is a lot of potential for that.” Mr. Goyal said at the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE).

Mr. Goyal, who was formerly the Minister of Railways, recalled how the Indian Railways struggled to find organisational research answers till IIT-Bombay came up with them.

The work of IIT will benefit the railroads, and it will shortly release a redesigned timetable structure based on the research.

According to Mr. Goyal, the closely interconnected global economies necessitate considerable value addition in the supply chain, such as upgrading packaging and storage operations.

The minister stated that supply chain research and planning should not be limited to the commercial sector, and that similar efforts should be made in the delivery of public services as well.

Mr. Goyal has previously created a logistics and supply chain management centre of excellence.

Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty, chairman of NITIE's Board of Governors and CEO of Allcargo Logistics, said the institute aims to have autonomy similar to that enjoyed by IITs and IIMs, and asked the minister for assistance.
