India and Austria have taken a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations, with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi announcing an expanded partnership across defence, semiconductors and advanced technologies during talks with Austrian Chancellor Mr. Christian Stocker in New Delhi. The visit, marking the first by an Austrian Chancellor to India in over four decades, signals a new phase in ties. Both leaders emphasized enhancing cooperation in critical and emerging sectors, including quantum technology and biotechnology, while aligning capabilities to build resilient global supply chains. India highlighted its scale and growth potential, while Austria’s technological expertise is expected to complement India’s rapid development trajectory.

The partnership also builds on longstanding collaboration in infrastructure, innovation and sustainability. Austria has contributed to key Indian projects such as the Delhi Metro and the Atal Tunnel, along with involvement in railway systems, clean energy and urban development initiatives. Both sides aim to boost trade and investment flows, supported by a strong business delegation accompanying the Austrian leadership. Additionally, new initiatives such as joint research, start-up collaboration and the India-Austria Working Holiday Programme are expected to deepen people-to-people ties. The leaders also reiterated their commitment to addressing global challenges, advocating institutional reforms and strengthening cooperation against terrorism, while aiming to build an innovation-driven and future-ready bilateral partnership.
