India is emerging as a leading global research hub, with ambitions to become a frontrunner in biotechnology, according to the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Mr. Ajay Sood. Speaking at the Global Bio-India 2024 Summit, he highlighted India’s rapid advancements in research and innovation, noting a significant leap in the country's ranking. A recent report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) placed India among the top 5 nations in 45 out of 64 technologies, up from 37 the previous year.
He also noted India’s rise in biological manufacturing, which now holds second position globally. He praised the new biotechnology policy, Bio-E3, for its role in driving economic growth, environmental sustainability, and job creation. The policy now incorporates a fourth "E" for energy transition, reflecting the urgency of addressing global warming. He emphasized the need for collaboration among research institutions, universities, companies, and the government to foster a sustainable and innovative biotech environment, integrating emerging technologies such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence. He also underscored the importance of these advancements in achieving a carbon-neutral future through innovations like carbon sequestration and bioenergy crops.
