India has crossed 65 lakh rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana within 104 days, marking progress in the country's residential solar energy adoption. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Mr. Pralhad Joshi announced the milestone while addressing a session on Rooftop Solar as a Catalyst for the Global Energy Transition at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi. More than one lakh installations are taking place every six days, reflecting growing household participation in the country's clean energy transition. The scheme aims to encourage the adoption of rooftop solar systems and expand access to renewable energy among households.

India's non-fossil fuel-based installed power capacity stood at 310 gigawatts (GW), including 172 GW of installed solar power capacity. This marks a significant increase from around 3 GW of installed solar capacity before 2014. Delhi Chief Minister Ms. Rekha Gupta highlighted the role of central government subsidies, along with additional assistance from the Delhi government, in encouraging rooftop solar adoption in the national capital. The Delhi government has set a target of installing rooftop solar systems in two lakh households by March 2027, further supporting the expansion of distributed solar energy.
