India crosses a historic milestone 50,000 NQAS Certifications: A Quantum Leap in Quality in Public Healthcare

The Government of India has created history by crossing 50,000 National Quality Assurance Standards certifications for public health facilities as of December 31, 2025. In total, 50,373 facilities across all States and Union Territories have now been certified under the NQAS framework instituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), reflecting a significant improvement in quality, safety, and patient-centered care in public healthcare. This milestone underlines India's commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality health care, especially to the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized sections of the population. When the NQAS initiative with just 10 certified facilities, its initial focus was on District Hospitals and progressively expanded to include Sub-District Hospitals, Community Health Centres, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (such as SHCs, PHCs, UPHCs), and Sub Health Centres. Introduction of Virtual Assessments further accelerated the pace of certification, and the certified facilities, before reaching the current milestone by December 2025, an exponential scale-up in just one year.

This achievement is in line with India's vision of attaining Universal Health Coverage, as envisioned by the National Health Policy, which is committed to quality and affordable healthcare without financial hardship. Such rapid scaling up stands testimony to a strong strategy comprising continuous capacity building, digital innovation, and quality improvement mechanisms. Crossing 50,000 certifications has reinforced India's commitment toward building a resilient, self-reliant, and high-quality public health system that embodies the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas. The Government remains committed to further expansion of NQAS certification, with an interim target to achieve certification of at least 50% of public health facilities by March 2026, thus strengthening the institutionalization of quality, safety, and patient-centered care across the country.
