India deepens regional statistical ties in cooperation with United Nations (UN) agencies

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is hosting a three-day Regional Workshop on “Data Ethics, Governance, and Quality in a Changing Data Ecosystem” in collaboration with the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP) and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) from July 14 to 16, 2025. This workshop brings together Chief Statisticians and Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) from 16 Asia-Pacific countries, including Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Viet Nam. The event highlights India’s commitment to ethical and future-ready data ecosystems. Secretary, MoSPI, Dr Saurabh Garg, emphasised the importance of addressing data ethics and quality for evidence-based policymaking. He also highlighted MoSPI’s initiatives towards data standards and interoperability. UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC), Mr. Shombi Sharp, in India, noted that India is the first country to develop a subnational SDG indicator framework, appreciating India’s significant achievements in terms of SDGs.
The workshop includes four thematic sessions focusing on the evolving role of NSOs, modernisation of institutional frameworks, quality assurance in official statistics, and adoption of modern statistical production architectures. These sessions are complemented by interactive breakout sessions and group discussions, offering opportunities for peer learning and exchange of experiences. The workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of NSOs to remain relevant and trusted amid the rapidly changing data landscape. It underscores the importance of South-South cooperation and the sharing of good practices to help NSOs adapt to new technologies and data sources. Following the regional workshop, a two-day National Capacity Building Workshop will be held from July 17 to 18, 2025 to strengthen statistical systems in India’s States and Union Territories.
