India is making significant progress towards its 2030 energy goals. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi confirmed that the country will achieve 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol by October 2025. The targets include adding 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, making Indian Railways a net-zero emitter, and producing five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. E20 petrol is now available at over 15,600 outlets, and E100 fuel was launched last year. India has also seen a 32-fold increase in solar energy generation capacity over the past decade. It is now the world’s third-largest solar power producer. Recent budget allocations aim to boost domestic solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing and battery storage infrastructure, further strengthening the renewable energy sector.

India also focuses on hydrocarbons, with untapped reserves in its 3.36 million square kilometer sedimentary basin. Currently, only 10% of this area is under exploration, with plans to increase it to 16% by the end of 2024, though still short of the one million square kilometer target set for 2030. The country remains the fourth-largest petroleum refining hub, with refining capacity projected to grow from 256 million tonnes to 309 million tonnes by 2028. With its abundant resources, strategic location, and stable political environment, India aims to become a leading global energy producer while balancing renewable and traditional energy sources.
