The proposed India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is expected to simplify corporate cooperation and strengthen industrial and research partnerships between Indian and European businesses, according to Sweden’s Ambassador to India, Ms. Petra Menander. Speaking on the sidelines of the Bharat RE Summit and Expo 2026, she highlighted the agreement’s potential to facilitate technology transfers, joint research programmes and industrial collaboration. Ms. Petra Menander noted that the framework would provide institutional support to existing commercial and scientific engagements, enabling technologies developed in both regions to be deployed more widely. The proposed pact is also expected to create opportunities for businesses to deepen cooperation across emerging technology and clean energy sectors.
India and Sweden are already collaborating in areas such as renewable energy integration, battery development, green hydrogen and low-emission industrial manufacturing. Swedish technology companies, including Hitachi Energy, are supporting grid integration to improve the transmission of renewable power. The two countries are also engaged in scientific and industrial initiatives, including the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) and cooperation on green steel production using hydrogen. Bilateral trade in goods and services increased from Rs. 19,222.07 crore (US$ 2.86 billion) in 2016 to approximately Rs. 60,529.00 crore (US$ 7 billion) in 2024-25. Sweden’s cumulative foreign direct investment equity inflows into India stood at Rs. 24,618.00 crore (US$ 2.59 billion), making it the 22nd-largest investor in the country.
