India has successfully exported 12.50 metric tonnes (MT) of Dashehari and Langra mangoes from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, to Dubai through the sea route, marking a significant milestone in the country's fresh fruit export sector. The shipment demonstrated the commercial viability of a sea-based export protocol jointly developed by the ICAR–Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (ICAR-CISH) and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Exported in a 40-foot refrigerated container by Shehnaz Export in partnership with Attashi Global to Lulu Group, the consignment was processed using scientifically developed post-harvest management practices. The mangoes were treated with METWASH, an ICAR-CISH-developed shelf-life enhancement technology and transported through an uninterrupted cold chain to preserve quality during transit. Despite weather-related delays, the shipment completed a 25-day harvest-to-market journey, with nearly 90% of the fruit arriving in marketable condition, validating the effectiveness of the new export protocol.
The successful sea shipment demonstrates that premium Indian mangoes can be exported economically while maintaining quality, significantly reducing logistics costs compared with air freight. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the lower transportation costs enabled exporters to offer farmers an additional Rs. 15-20 (US$ 0.16-0.21) per kilogram, improving farm incomes and enhancing the competitiveness of Indian mangoes in international markets. As the first successful commercial sea export of Dashehari and Langra mangoes from Uttar Pradesh under an extended transit period, the initiative opens new opportunities to expand exports to Gulf countries and other global destinations. The new protocol is expected to encourage wider adoption of sea freight for fresh fruit exports, strengthen India's agri-export ecosystem, enhance export earnings, expand global market access and provide sustainable income opportunities for mango growers.
