India exports 16.9 lakh tonnes of sugar as of January 4 of FY23: Report

The trade body, All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) reported that India has exported 16.9 lakh tonnes of sugar as of January 4 of the ongoing marketing year 2022-23, which also included the export of 59,596 tonnes of the sweetener to China. In the marketing year 2021-22, the exports of sugar from India stood at around 112 lakh tonnes.

The sugar marketing year runs from October-September and the government has allowed the export of 6 million tonnes till May of the current marketing year. AISTA reported that India has exported 1.47 lakh tonnes of sugar to Bangladesh, and 82,462 tonnes to Sri Lanka from October 1 to January 4 of the current marketing year. The maximum exports have been to Somalia at 1.70 lakh tonnes and are followed by the UAE at 1.69 lakh tonnes, Djibouti at 1.50 lakh tonnes, and Sudan at 1.37 lakh tonnes. In addition to it, about 1.36 lakh tonnes of sugar has been exported to Malaysia, 1.18 lakh tonnes to Indonesia, and 1.08 lakh tonnes to Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, around 3.47 lakh tonnes of sugar are under loading, while 2.54 lakh tonnes of sugar have been delivered to refineries and should be considered as deemed export.
