India has emerged as the fastest-growing developer population globally, ranking second in public generative artificial intelligence (AI) projects on GitHub, according to an announcement by GitHub Chief Executive Officer Mr. Thomas Dohmke. This year, the United States led in contributions to GitHub’s generative AI projects, with India following closely behind, contributing 108 million new repositories and logging 5.2 billion contributions across all projects on the platform. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed admiration for India's rapid growth, stating, "India’s rise as a global tech titan is inexorable." In response, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi praised Indian youth, noting their exceptional capabilities in innovation and technology.
GitHub's blog post revealed that the platform is experiencing an unprecedented influx of developers. In 2024, there has been a 59% increase in contributions to generative AI projects and a 98% rise in overall projects, with many contributions coming from countries such as India, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. The report predicts that India is on track to surpass the United States and become the world’s largest developer population on GitHub by 2028. Additionally, Brazil and Nigeria are also noted as rapidly growing developer communities. A report by the learning platform Udemy published in September highlighted that skills related to GitHub are highly sought after in India, comparable to the demand for English grammar.
