India has provided rooftop solar systems to multiple religious sites in Sri Lanka, reinforcing its energy partnership with the island nation, as announced by the Indian High Commission. Representatives from the High Commission of India, the Ceylon Electricity Board, and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority officially handed over the solar panels and associated equipment to the Buddhist temple in Hokandara, Sri Aanjaneyar Temple, St. Anthony’s Church, and Mutwal Jumma Mosque, according to Economy Next.

This initiative is part of a US$ 17 million Indian project to install 25 MW of solar rooftop systems across 5,000 religious institutions in Sri Lanka, spanning all nine provinces and 25 districts. Projected to supply around 37 million units annually, it aligns with Sri Lanka’s goal to reduce energy costs and accelerate the shift towards renewable energy. The installations are expected to be completed by early next year, with a five-year maintenance period to ensure sustainability. This collaboration aligns with India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, highlighting cooperative projects that address Sri Lankan priorities. Additional renewable projects include solar electrification of approximately 9,000 Buddhist Temples and Pirivenas under a US$ 10 million grant and hybrid renewable energy initiatives for three islands near Jaffna. Major ventures also cover LNG supply and infrastructure development and the solar power plant at Sampur.
