India Has Five Semiconductor Units in Production, ISM 2.0 to Build Wider Ecosystem: MeitY Secretary Mr. S. Krishnan

India now has five semiconductor units that have been built and are in production, marking a key milestone in the country’s semiconductor manufacturing push, according to Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Mr. S. Krishnan. The next phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 2.0) will build on the manufacturing capacity established under the first phase by developing a broader domestic semiconductor ecosystem across the wider chip value chain. Mr. S. Krishnan described 2026 as a landmark year for India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions, with five units having reached the manufacturing and production stage. ISM 2.0 will take an ecosystem-based approach to develop capabilities and supporting industries required for semiconductor production in India.
SEMICON India 2026 has also attracted significant international participation, with more than 600 companies participating in the exhibition, including 300 overseas companies. Nearly 40,000 delegates from 52 countries have registered for the event, with about one-third of the delegates from overseas. The participation reflects growing international interest in India as a future semiconductor manufacturing destination. The fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 is being held from September 17-19, 2026, at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”. The three-day event brings together companies, investors, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders from across the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.
