India has emerged as the world’s sixth-largest patent filer with over 64,000 patents, more than 55% of which are filed by resident Indian innovators, signalling a major shift towards domestic innovation, Union Minister of Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, said at the Annual Tech Fest INNOTECH’25 at KIET Deemed University. He said the rise in resident filings reflects the success of India’s policy reforms, increased research incentives, and a robust innovation ecosystem built under the leadership of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. India’s leap from Rank 81 to Rank 38 in the Global Innovation Index, alongside milestones such as Chandrayaan-3 and the world’s first DNA vaccine, demonstrates the nation’s emergence as a global science and technology leader, he added.
He said events like INNOTECH’25 exemplify India’s push toward deep-tech entrepreneurship and public-private collaboration. He noted that start-ups and applied sciences now offer more opportunities than traditional government jobs, supported by schemes such as Mudra, PM-Svanidhi, and PM-Vishwakarma. He also highlighted initiatives under the National Education Policy 2020, including INSPIRE fellowships, MANAK awards, and the Vaibhav initiative, as key enablers for nurturing India’s next generation of innovators.
