Mr Nitin Gadkari, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that the number of electric vehicles on Indian roads has surpassed 10 lakh, with over 1,700 charging stations in public areas around the country. According to Vahan 4 statistics, a total of 10,76,420 electric vehicles (EVs) and 1,742 public charging stations (PCS) were operational as of March 25 this year, according to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

"Action Plans have been prepared by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for 8 cities with a 4 million-plus population (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Surat, and Pune)," He said. Scenario-based targets for the installation of chargers in various cities have been prepared under these action plans for Business as Usual (BAU), Moderate, and Aggressive Scenarios.

Under the FAME India Scheme Phase-II for Highways and Expressways, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) requested proposals from any government organisation or public sector undertaking (PSU) to create and run public EV charging infrastructure on expressways and national highways. PSU Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), in collaboration with Convergence Energy Services Limited (a subsidiary of EESL), has been given the task of installing EV charging stations along 16 national highways or expressways.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also awarded 39 such facilities for development as part of the Wayside Amenities (WSAs), according to the statement.
