India’s shipbuilding industry is positioning itself as a global hub for next-generation maritime capabilities, with strong indigenous expertise spanning the entire value chain. Indian shipyards have demonstrated their ability to deliver complex platforms ranging from aircraft carriers and submarines to advanced research vessels and energy-efficient commercial ships. The ecosystem is supported by a robust network of public and private shipyards and thousands of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), covering steel, propulsion systems, electronics, sensors, and advanced combat technologies. Flagship projects such as INS Vikrant, Kalvari class submarines, and stealth frigates highlight both technological maturity and growing design capability. With all Indian Navy and Coast Guard vessels currently under construction being built domestically, the sector reflects rising self-reliance and industrial depth.
Forward-looking policy reforms and a sharp focus on indigenisation drive this transformation. The Indian Navy currently has 262 indigenous design and development projects in advanced stages, with several shipyards targeting 100% indigenous content within this decade. This reduces vulnerability to supply chain disruptions and strengthens long-term operational resilience. The industry is also emerging as a cornerstone of the blue economy, attracting interest from global defence majors for collaboration on sustainable technologies and resilient maritime platforms. India’s integrated approach combining innovation, manufacturing, and lifecycle support positions it as a strategic partner for co-developing future maritime solutions.
