Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Mr. Amit Shah announced on June 29 that the Central Government has set a target of achieving Rs. 8,549 crore (US$ 1 billion) in turmeric exports by 2030. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Headquarters of the Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana, he stated that the board would focus on packing, branding, marketing, and facilitating international exports. The newly formed board is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring remunerative prices for turmeric farmers, supporting research and development, and boosting global demand for India’s turmeric.
He highlighted that the establishment of the Turmeric Board fulfils Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s 2023 assembly election promise to turmeric farmers in Telangana. The board’s formation addresses a long-standing demand of farmers in Nizamabad. The Central Government has also allocated Rs. 200 crore (US$ 23.39 million) for improving crop quality, conducting research, and enhancing farmer incomes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) credited Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi for honouring his commitment, calling it a major step towards empowering farmers. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Mr. Dharmapuri Arvind, had pledged to establish the board during the 2019 elections. The Centre’s commitment to boosting turmeric exports aligns with its broader strategy to increase agricultural value through structured market linkages and export-oriented growth.
