May was a busy month for India Inc, with 190 agreements totaling US$ 19.1 billion, representing the second-highest monthly value in four years. In May, 40 M&A transactions totaling US$ 11.9 billion were completed, led by Adani Group's US$ 10.5 billion acquisition of Holcim's Indian assets, the country's largest-ever infrastructure transaction. In May 2018, total deal values reached US$ 25.8 billion, led by Walmart's US$ 16 billion acquisition of Flipkart, India's largest e-commerce company.
Although the number of M&A transactions has decreased, deal values have increased (on the back of marquee deals). The Adani-Holcim (US$ 10.5 billion) transaction accounted for the largest monthly value in cross-border transactions.
With 11 agreements valued at US$ 70 million, the start-up sector continued to dominate deal activity, accounting for 27% of M&A deal volumes. Retail technology led the sector in terms of volume with 27%, followed by edtech and auto-tech with two agreements each. In the month, private equity investments reached new highs in terms of value and volume, totaling US$ 7.2 billion across 150 transactions. This was an almost 170% increase in deal values, led by two multibillion-dollar transactions, and a huge 81% increase in deal volumes, driven by small ticket agreements (US$ 49 million), accounting for 72% of overall PE deal volumes. In terms of public offerings, there were 17 IPOs with a total issue size of US$ 6 billion in 2022, compared to 19 IPOs with a total issue size of US$ 4 billion in 2021.
